Default Vista in a Laptop?

I have an IBM Thinkpad with plenty of hard drive space, 1 gig of RAM, and some form of integrated graphics.

I have heard that Vista is better than Windows XP in many ways, and of course, I want to try it. I would like to know if you think I would be better off running XP, or if you think I would be capable of smoothly running Vista. The laptop won't be used for any video games, but might be used for image editing, web design, etc.

Thanks

On that particular system you're definitely better off with Windows XP.

XP> Vista. Why? because Vista hasn't been all patched up yet. Preliminary testing on my thinkpad suggests it is more memory intensive (i.e. resource hog) also.

It depends a lot on your processor and your specific video adapter. My experience is that while Vista is very cool, the desktop window manager (used in the visuals and various other things) kind of eats up the memory on my laptop. It might be worth trying, but it's hard to make a solid call which is better on a particular machine.

I might move to Vista Home Premium eventually on my laptop, mainly because Vista seems to understand what video card is actually in my machine and hopefully might have a chance at managing it better. Another option is to go with Home Basic but that cuts out a lot of the cool theming effects which is really a shame because they're pretty spiff looking.

No really?!? :-|

It's supposed to scale with what you get in return, duh...
"Oh gee, Windows XP is a bigger resource hog than Windows 95, I wish I never upgraded!"
Ofcourse it is, that's why the system requirements are also higher, doesn't mean it's not worth it though.

Apart from that you should never get anything when it's just new, I agree with you on that.
Always wait and watch as others get drowned in all the misery of a system's childhood-bugs and then... when it's all fixed, you can get it yourself.

I just purchased a laptop from Dell for Christmas and recieved a free upgrade to Windows Vista. I'll wait a while before I upgrade to Vista, give Microsoft some time to debug it before I put it on my laptop. Here are the minimum system requirements for Vista:

We will just have to wait and see if Vista lives up to the hype.

It's running pretty well on my husband's Dell laptop. We've been running it pretty much since we got the laptop, and it's great. Used it as a Media Center to watch TV off of last night.
